Dive into
local cuisine and culture with the local culinary experiences. One of the best
thing you can do during your holidays is to merge yourself with the local
people and experience the different way of life people are living in other part
of the world. And the way to explore the local culture is to explore the local
food.
Kathmandu
is amazing city! Though the city is disgusting, poorly organized, dust and rubbish
everywhere, holes in the street, crazy horns……still have got its charm! Mostly
people don’t say NEVER when they think to visit Kathmandu. This small and
over-populated city has many things to offer and the kind people are always
there to welcome you. Get inside one’s house and ask if they allow you in their
kitchen!
There are
many places commercially and just-for-fun offering cooking classes. Some of the
cooking classes has been quite popular among the tourist. Here I am going to
make some suggestion before you choose the cooking class and the dish you are
going to make. You are going to have amazing experience for sure but some early
preparation can help you to make it a great pleasure.
Shop
ingredients yourself:
Spending
couple of hours for finding your ingredients is another way to understand the
local market. You will get more knowledge about the spices, local vegetables
and other ingredients you are going to use. Your cooking couch may offer you
basic ingredients available but buying even a small thing like salt, turmeric
powder, mustard oil, Sichuan pepper, etc. gives you knowledge about the local
market as well. Best fun you are going to have is all about bargaining and
bartering while shopping in local market with a local people.
Know your
food:
Know the
basic information about the food you are going to cook. Also ask your cooking
coach about the origin of the food and its health benefit. Spices plays the
important role so be careful if you are cooking with the expert. Nepali food is
really not popular and there are not fancy verities showcased commercially. You
have to find out different verities by asking yourself so that you can know
more than Dal Bhat and MoMo.
Stay with
your cooking coach:
Ask your
cooking coach if you can stay with them for a couple of nights. You can
continue learning about their kitchen meal by spending few more time with their
family. Better you take at least 2 days packages for cooking class.
Can you
cook it again in your home?
If you are
not able to try the dish in your home that you learn here, it is worthless. Be
sure you will be able to find the ingredients in your place as well. When you
can cook it again in your home and feed your friends and family, that is the
wonderful souvenir you bought for them.
And, at
last I wish you all then best to find the proper cooking class and have great
experience in Nepal.
